Solar astronomy with an experienced astronomer

We observe the sun with a variety of telescopes and filters. Our star is the only star than can be magnified in a telescope. Even the Hubble telescope shows other stars as a point of light, no bigger than is visible to the naked eye. Hence it is important to study the sun to know more about stars in general. The sun is observed in the following wavelengths

  • Hydrogen alpha
  • Visible light

For Hydrogen alpha or H-alpha, we use a telescope that is only used for pointing to the sun and nothing else. Observers can see plasma jutting out of the sun and learn about prominences and filaments, among other solar phenomena.

Visible light observation is done using solar filters or a Herschel wedge. Both methods offer a safe way to view the sun, minus all the heat and harmful emission. Remember, never to point a night time telescope at the sun, as you will risk damage to your eyes!

In this module, we speak about the origin of our sun, its eventual demise. We also talk about other stars and how they vary from our sun, and how their eventual end may be different
